Globe Theatre in the Valley needs fundraising help to move after rent doubled

UPDATE: Friday October 29

Negotiations are under way to save The Globe theater from it’s November 30 eviction deadline, a theatre spokesperson today said.

Spokesperson for the Globe, Blaire Gillespie, said the Brunswick street theatre was in negotiations with their landlord to remain open until a new Fortitude Valley venue can be found.

Ms Gillespie said the theater had no plans to close it’s doors to the public as shows were booked until June next year.

“We have no intention of closing, we intend to open up a new venue,” she said.

More details on the Globe theatre contract to come early next week.

A spokesperson for the Globe Theatre in Fortitude Valley says the organisation is looking for volunteers to help it move after its landlord doubled the rent.

Blaire Gillespie says the theatre needs to raise $160,000 to move across Brunswick Street, and is looking for a fundraising crew including poster designers, musicians, photographers and video camera operators, lifters and carriers, sausage sizzlers and other fundraisers. The theatre is also collecting donations.

To help, contact Blaire Gillespie on blaire.m.gillespie@gmail.com, or at the Globe Theatre itself.

Refugee Action Collective to meet Wednesday to discuss planned changes to family and child detention

The Refugee Action Collective will hold an organising meeting this Wednesday to discuss their response to the Government’s recently-announced changes to immigration detention.

The Government says it will move several hundred children and families from detention centres into community detention. The people moved will be ordered to live at certain addreses, obey curfews and report to immigration authorities.

The Government also plans to open new detention centres in the Adelaide Hills and near Perth. The Adelaide Hills centre will house family groups, including children. The Refugee Action Collective’s Ian Rintoul says if the Government was serious, it would change the law to make sure children and families are never placed in detention.

The Refugee Action Collective meeting is this Wednesday, October 27, at 6.30pm at the Romero Centre, 20 Dutton St, Dutton Park, close to the 196 and 198 bus routes and the Dutton Park railway station. Click here for a Google Map.
