Pro-Choice meeting tonight to plan rally in Queens Park this Saturday October 9

The Pro-Choice Action Collective is meeting tonight to plan a rally in support of a Cairns woman who is charged with procuring her own abortion. Tegan Simone Leach will face trial in Cairns under Section 225 of the Queensland Criminal Code on Tuesday October 12.

Tonight’s meeting will be held at 6.30pm at the Trades and Labour Council building at 16 Peel Street, South Brisbane, near the corner of Grey Street, and a short walk from the Cultural Centre bus station, the South Brisbane train station and the South Bank City Cat terminal. Kathy Newnham, of the Pro-Choice Action Collective, said “the Cairns couple should not be facing trial, because the laws under which they are being tried should not exist. Women have the right to control their own bodies. These charges are the most extreme attack on abortion rights for decades. In fact, it is the first time that a woman has been charged under Queensland’s anti-abortion laws”.

The rally will be held this Saturday, October 9 at 1pm in Queens Park in Brisbane City, on the corner of George and Elizabeth Sts. Click here for a Google Map
