The University of Southern Queensland has cancelled a seminar that was to be held at its Hervey Bay campus by Young Earth creationists. The seminar had been organised by Creation Ministries International, who believe the Bible is without error in all fields it covers, including history and science, and that “Scripture teaches a recent origin for man and the whole creation”.
An open letter to USQ staff by Jayson D Cooke, President of the Griffith University Society for Skeptics and Freethinkers, said neither of the advertised speakers, Doctors Donald Batten and Tasman Walker, had professional credentials in biology, evolutionary biology or theology, and their organisation has no standing in the scientific community and their goals are not to advance science.
An email from Dr Aidan Burke, USQ’s Director of Corporate Communications, that was posted on the Australasian Skeptics internet forum, (cached here) said the university had moved quickly to withdraw assistance to the seminar, and told the organisers to make alternative arrangements. David Jackmanson spoke to both Jayson D Cooke and Dr Tasman Walker – click on the links below to hear the full interviews.
