A Brisbane journalism school’s online newspaper has criticised the Brisbane City Council’s tactic of withholding information from journalists. An article on Newsbytes.com.au gives several examples of Council media officers refusing to give information to journalists from the school, including attempts to intimidate a journalist who went to a councillor’s office seeking information about a community protest. Another journalist was refused information about a land resumption although the matter was discussed at an open Council meeting.
Earlier this year the State Government amended the City of Brisbane act to allow the Brisbane City Council to keep information from the Civic Cabinet secret for ten years. The Newsbytes website also describes withholding of information by State Government media officers in another article.
