Telstra Countrywide and the Torres Strait Island Regional Council have announced a new telecommunications network across the Torres Strait’s outer islands

Telstra will roll out high-speed radio at five islands and upgrade local exchanges on 15 islands, bringing the region the same technology most of Australians already have access to.
TSIRC Mayor Fred Gela says though its taken 18 months of negotiation with Telstra, he is delighted that they will now help the council roll out the new network.
Councillor Gela adds, the new network will improve the council’s productivity and provide better services for homes in the region.
