The French government is one step closer to banning full face veils.
The French National Assembly voted 35 votes to 1 to ban women from wearing niqabs or burquas in public.
Islamic groups claim that the ban, which will levy fines of 150 dollars for each violation, stigmatizes Islam. But the French Justice Minister, Michele Alliot-Marie, says that the bill doesn’t stigmatize or single out any religion.
The bill will now pass on to the senate.
