Secrecy law criticised as not deterring corruption

1 A new law, recently passed by state parliament, will make City Council documents exempt from Freedom of Information laws.
1 The City of Brisbane Act, passed last night, makes documents viewed by council cabinet inaccessible for 10 years, similar to 30 year secrecy bans on state and federal documents.
1 Both the government and the LNP opposition supported the bill, leaving only independent MPs in opposition. Former LNP MP Rob Messenger said that the bill would worsen corruption.
1 But the current city council, led by Lord Mayor Cambell Newman, defended the bill. He said that it was important to shield cabinet debates from public viewing.
