Environment law change hurts Papuans

Indigenous Papuans have lost the right to challenge developers attempts to exploit their land and resources, due to changes in environment laws.

According to the British Financial Times, amendments to the existing laws, passed by parliament on Friday, make prosecuting mining companies for environmental damage more difficult. They also give the government wide ranging powers over environmental permits.

Native Papuans own nearly all the land in Papua New Guinea, including valuable gold, nickel and other deposits.
