PNG Attorney-General attempts to ban all public discussion on environmental law changes

Papua New Guinea's Attorney-General, Mr Ano Pala, has ordered citizens of that country to stop discussing controversial amendments to the Environment Act, reports the newspaper The National. The amendments meant that approval for resource projects cannot be challenged in court, nor could companies be sued for any environmental damage or abuse of workers caused by those projects.

Written advice from Mr Pala says because the amendments are being challenged in Papua New Guinea's Supreme Court, public discussion of them may be in contempt of court. The advice says "there will be no more talk-back radio programs or interviews, no more advertisements, no more letters to editors, no more public meetings and above all there will be no more public demonstrations or protest marches". The advice also orders police commanders to ban public meetings, demonstrations and protest marches.
