Environmental group’s fight against proposed Colton Mine

An environmental group in south-east Queensland’s Wide Bay region said it will continue its fight against the proposed Colton mine, north of Maryborough, despite Chinese backing.

Northern Energy Corporation yesterday announced Chinese steel manufacturer Xinyang’s plans to buy 65 per cent of the coking coal produced from the Colton mine.

Xinyang will also invest $23 million into Northern Energy, which is waiting on State Government approval for the mining lease.

Wide Bay Burnett Conservation Council coordinator Emma-Kate Currie said she is not worried by the announcement.
