Government education needed on why people use people-smugglers, says Refugee Action Collective

The Refugee Action Collective says the Rudd Government needs to educate people about why asylum seekers are coming to Australia. This follows a report in Brisbane’s Sunday Mail yesterday saying that asylum seekers had been transferred to Brisbane from Christmas Island, and were shopping.

We spoke to Ian Rintoul of the Refugee Action Collective. Click on the link above to download the audio file of what he said, or to listen to it at the 4ZZZ News Posterous.

Piers Akerman in today’s Daily Telegraph said the transfer of asylum seekers to Brisbane is evidence that the Rudd Government’s border protection policies encourage people-smuggling. This is despite an analysis last year of Brisbane blogger Scott Steel, in his Pollytics blog, showing that the number of asylum seekers is driven by wars and disasters overseas, and not the policy of Australia’s Government.

What everyone, including Ian Rintoul, need to understand is that refugees are not paying people smugglers to do anything because giving refugees a ride is legally NOT PEOPLE SMUGGLING.

It is simply giving people a ride and was legalised by two treaties, the refugee convention and the people smuggling protocol which says at article 19 that the movement of refugees across borders is excluded from the crime of people smuggling.
