Research released today by Microsoft Australia, shows 65% of Australian parents take no precautions to protect their children online despite easy access to parental control tools .

Microsoft revealed 20 percent of parents have never discussed online safety, with children as young as four having unsupervised and unrestricted access to the internet. Whilst children as young as six have been caught viewing unsavoury material, chatting to strangers, downloading software without permission and handing over personal details.

Experts advise talking to children about online safety, keeping the computer in the lounge room rather than their bedroom and using Parental Controls software, can help protect children from inappropriate content and contact.
