Aung San Suu Kyi banned from elections

Aung San Suu Kyi, a dissident opposition leader in Burma, has been prevented from running for office again after a new law passed by the country’s military government.

Suu Kyi, who convincingly won the last elections held in the South-East Asian nation in 1990 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991, has been under house arrest since shortly before that election for most of the last two decades.

The law, which prohibits people in jail participating in any political party, has been criticized by human rights groups.
