New Congo offensive started, says UN

The UN launched an offensive into the Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the weekend, Reuters reports.

Eighteen battalions of the resurgent Congolese army, constituting thousands of troops, launched a series of targeted attacks in the region, aimed at Hutu rebels and militia groups, with the UN providing medical and logistical support.

The region has been contested since 1994, when hundreds of thousands of Hutus fled neighboring Rwanda after their attempted genocide there.
