Poor Media Reporting in Haneef Case

The Crikey website reports that new research into the media coverage surrounding the Dr Haneef case has revealed mistakes which were not been corrected, may have been made by the media on several occasions.

This comes at the same time as Dr Haneef’s legal team is trying to access more documents from the case by going to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

Academic Dr Jacqui Ewart, who contributed a chapter regarding these mistakes to the book “Islam and the Australian News Media”, has said that these errors have impacted upon the public and their views on the Haneef case. Dr Ewart said that this shows the journalism industry’s inability to critique itself. These recent inquiries have also sparked conflict with Indian students living in Australia.
