New NT legislation ‘flawed’

The Law Council of Australia claims that current attempts by the Federal Government to bring the Northern Territory intervention in line with the Racial Discrimination Act are flawed.

Law Council President Glenn Ferguson says the proposed Welfare Reform Bill will not end discrimination for Aborigines, and will simply make the intervention easier for authorities.

The Federal Government suspended the Racial Discrimination Act in 2007 to allow a police and military intervention in Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory.
