Vancouver’s sea level means few world records

An exercise physiologist has told us to expect few records being broken at the Vancouver Winter Olympics because of the low altitude.

Robert Chapman, an expert in altitude training, says that because Vancouver is at sea level, there is greater than normal air resistance for an Olympic games, which will effect highly practiced, precise movements.

All current world records for speed skating occurred in Calgary or Salt Lake City, which are both over 1 km above sea level.
