New research has shown only 33 per cent of Australians support the Rudd Government’s controversial Emissions Trading Scheme.
Executive Director of the Australian Climate Science Coalition, Max Rheese, has called on the government to abandon its current policy in favour of one geared towards adaptation to climate variability.
“The current climate policy for Australia which is, in fact, a global warming policy is not in the natonal interest and we’d be urging the government to have a complete rethink of this whole issue and to come up with a national climate policy.”
Mr Rheese also criticised the current focus on man made climate change, as opposed to natural variations
“There is no such thing as a global temperature, it’s a statistic. We’ve got more to worry about from natural variability than we do for anything that man is able to influence the climate. Certainly there is a small influence from Man’s activities, (but) it’s so small that we’ve not yet been able to measure whether that’s a net negative or positive.”
