GM ban lifted in WA

The ban on the growth of genetically modified canola in Western Australia has been lifted, concerning some consumer groups.

Western Australia Premier, Colin Barnett, said the growth of GM canola gave farmers greater choice and was necessary to bring WA farmers in line with those from New South Wales and Victoria

However, Sally Wylie of the Consumers for GM Free Food Organisation said canola exports are likely to suffer as Japanese importers have already stated they are not interested in GM products.

Consumers will also be unaware if products on the shelf contain genetically modified ingredients, as there is no specific labelling required for GM products.
