Indigenous children over-represented in welfare

A study by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has found that the number of children in out-of-home care has increased by ten percent over the past year.

The statistics were released in a Child Protection report yesterday, and found that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were significantly over-represented in the child protection system.

Child Safety Spokesman Jack Dempsey said that the government needs to allocate the child safety budget more effectively, particularly into early intervention strategies.
