Wild Rivers Act Debate Heats Up

The Wild Rivers Act has stirred a federal debate about the effects on the indigenous community in Cape York, should the Act remain in place.

Federal Opposition leader Tony Abbott has claimed the act hinders the ability of the indigenous to benefit economically from their land and has initiated a Private Member’s Bill to overturn the legislation..

While Jason O’Brien, member for Cook, has denied the act imposes economic restrictions, Chairman of the Cape York Land Council, Richie Ahmat, has said if the Act was truly beneficial for the people of Cape York, there would be no debate.
